Gas to Bord na Mona Edenderry

Project overview

In March 2024, Gas Networks Ireland announced a development to connect Bord na Móna’s Edenderry Power Station to the national gas network

Edenderry Power Station has two different sets of electricity generation assets on site:  a baseload biomass plant and a peak load diesel plant.

This new gas connection project will convert Edenderry’s diesel plant to natural gas, resulting in an immediate 40% reduction in CO2 emissions.  The CO2 emissions reductions will continue into the future as Ireland’s gas network transitions to renewable gas.

Progress to date

Two public information events were held in Edenderry and Moyvalley in April and May respectively.  A further landowner information event took place in Kinnegad in June.  Consultation and discussions at these events have helped to refine the direction that the proposed pipeline will take.  Besides these consultations, a number of other factors have to be taken into account, including environmental, topographical, archaeological, ecological, heritage, as well as proximity to housing and other developments.  The pipeline design is at a very early stage, and it will need to go through a planning process with An Bord Pleanála.
