Be aware of carbon monoxide in your home
Dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide can accumulate at home as a result of any of the following:

Barbecue
Do not operate barbecue grills or patio heaters in any enclosed areas or under canopies: always use such appliances outdoors

Boiler
Ensure your appliances are installed and serviced annually by a Registered Gas Installer, Registered Oil Technician or qualified service agent for your fuel type

Gas cooker
Use appliances only for the purpose for which they were designed, e.g. never use a cooker to heat a room. Always make sure the grill door is open when the grill is on.

CO alarm
Use carbon monoxide alarms as an added protection but remember these are no substitute for regular inspection and maintenance of appliances, vents, flues and chimneys. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing an alarm.

Gas fire
Possible indications of CO include; staining, sooting or discolouration around the appliance; A strange smell when the appliance is on; Condensation on surrounding surfaces on start up; A yellow or orange flame where normally blue for a gas appliance.

Room vent
Make sure room vents are not blocked and that there is adequate ventilation. Appliances need air too!

Chimney
Make sure all chimneys are regularly swept, kept clear and have a crow guard fitted in order to prevent birds nesting in your chimney

Gas water heater
Open flue-type gas water heaters located in bathrooms and some flueless over sink water heaters in kitchens are considered unsafe. If you think you may have an unsafe gas water heater, contact Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 89 89 89 for a free safety check

Lawnmower
Never operate petrol driven lawnmowers or generator equipment indoors

Car exhaust
Vehicle engine or generator exhaust gases can also contain high levels of CO. Never run your car in an enclosed garage
