Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network
Read Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon NetworkGas Networks Ireland has published an ambitious transformation Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network, highlighting the essential role the national gas network will play in transitioning Ireland to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
The transformation pathway details the journey towards a repurposed, resized, and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045, ensuring a secure and reliable energy supply while supporting Ireland's climate and energy goals.
Pathway to Net Zero - Stakeholder Event
Gas Networks Ireland presented its plans to deliver a repurposed, resized, and fully decarbonised network by 2045 to over 100 senior industry stakeholders at a Pathway to Net Zero Carbon Network event held in Dublin recently.
The Irish Government has ambitious climate and energy targets to transition to net zero by 2050 and Gas Networks Ireland is committed to playing its part in meeting these targets. We hope that the insights and plans we shared on our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network provided our stakeholders with a clear understanding of how we hope to achieve this.
Gas Networks Ireland is committed to contributing to Ireland’s net zero carbon future by displacing all the natural gas on the network with renewable gases such as biomethane and green hydrogen.
This event was an important step on this journey, as it provided a forum for regulators, policymakers, customers and industry partners to engage, collaborate and build on the relationships that will deliver Ireland’s cleaner integrated energy system. Watch some of the key highlights from the event below.
100% Renewable Gas Network
A net zero carbon network will play a critical role in achieving the Government’s climate targets and ensuring our country successfully transitions to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. The Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network reflects the Government’s imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, by ensuring the gas network transports only renewable gases, biomethane and hydrogen while ensuring Ireland has a renewable, secure, and reliable energy supply in an increasingly integrated energy system.
Gas Networks Ireland believes that the realisation of a decarbonised gas network is in the best interests of Ireland’s energy customers, offering the most economical and least disruptive means of decarbonising energy use for many, and a vital alternative decarbonisation path for those consumers for whom electrification is very challenging.
Gas Networks Ireland is committed to working with government, policymakers, regulators, and key stakeholders to develop and invest in a more integrated, resilient, and flexible Irish gas network. As the company responsible for developing, operating, and maintaining the network, we are committed to making a vital contribution to Ireland’s net zero carbon future by displacing all the natural gas on our network with renewable gases.
