How to turn your gas supply on and off
Follow our step-by-step guide to safely turning off your gas supply at the meter
How to turn off your gas supply at the meter
The gas safety shut-off valve is located at your meter. If your meter is not located outside in a meter box, other common locations include:
-
Under the stairs
-
Beneath the kitchen sink
-
In the garage
Steps for turning gas off
Step One
Ensure that all your gas appliances and pilot lights are turned off. Do not attempt to turn off the gas supply at the meter until your natural gas appliances are turned off.
Step Two
Go to your meter. Locate the gas safety shut-off valve at your gas meter and turn it to the 'off' position. It is off when the lever is at a right angle to the pipe. If the gas safety shut-off valve is hard to reach or will not operate, contact Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 464 464.
Gas safety
Always exercise caution when turning your gas supply on or off.
Do not attempt to turn your gas on if the gas supply has been off for a long period of time. Have a Registered Gas Installer inspect your appliances and installation pipework first.
If you have had improvement work done to your home that may have affected the gas supply have a Registered Gas Installer inspect the installation pipework first before turning it on.
