Hydrogen Commercial Manager
Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.
Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.
The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.
The Role:
Reporting to the Hydrogen Programme Director, the Hydrogen Commercial Manager will provide deep subject matter expertise and guidance on the development of the hydrogen industry and the development and delivery of commercial initiatives to help accelerate the delivery of GNI’s Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network vision.
The Hydrogen Commercial Manager will support the implementation of the Hydrogen Programme and the development of commercial solutions, business cases and work with relevant external bodies, organisations and policy makers to drive the Hydrogen Programme forward.
A key part of the role will be working with internal and external stakeholders (Industry partners, Government Agencies, Regulatory Authorities, TSO’s, GDN’s, Academia etc.) to represent GNI interests and develop awareness of the role hydrogen can play in decarbonising Ireland energy system and the role the gas network can play therein. The successful applicant will be responsible for creating commercial opportunities and partnerships to promote innovation and development of hydrogen.
Duties and Responsibilities
Commercial Governance and Delivery
- Develop innovative commercial opportunities to grow the GNI business while seeking to decarbonise the Irish Energy system e.g. development of industrial hydrogen clusters
- Develop business cases and business plans to secure buy in and support for new commercial opportunities
- Investigate funding opportunities both nationally and European wide
- Consider and develop commercial contracts and agreements with customers and developers
Stakeholder Management and Advocacy
- Play leading role in the delivery of GNI messaging externally on the role of the gas network will play to enable a hydrogen economy
- Work with peers across the organisation providing subject matter expertise on the development of hydrogen initiatives
- Actively work with national and European stakeholders to facilitate mutually beneficial opportunities and areas for collaboration
- Represent GNI in delivering presentations at conferences, industry workshops or business meeting
- Active participation in hydrogen working groups as developed by DECC and other external stakeholders.
Hydrogen Programme Delivery
- Play leading role in the delivery of GNI’s hydrogen programme plan, including updates to governance forums, and overall project and budget management
- Identify and record risks within hydrogen projects
- Developing eLearning platforms to communicate on hydrogen to enhance the awareness across the organisation.
- Other duties may be assigned from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 8-10 years relevant experience, preferably in the natural gas or similar industry
- Proven commercial competence is essential with a degree in Business or Engineering
- Strong subject matter knowledge of hydrogen and the industry and emerging best practice is an advantage
- Knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements would be an advantage.
- Enthusiastic self-starter with a proactive approach to problem solving and process development
- Strong analytical and commercial acumen with high level of computer literacy.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade
- Strong stakeholder management experience at all levels to succeed in achieving mutually beneficial objectives
- Ability to set high standards, by encouraging others to assume responsibility and accountability for tasks
- Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed
- Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job
- Experience with identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas and implementing solutions.
