Discover more about Gas Networks Ireland.
Who we are
Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.
Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.
The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.
The role of Gas Networks Ireland
Delivering a safe, secure and efficient supply for customers
We ensure that almost 725,000 gas customers receive a safe, efficient and secure supply of gas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Transporting gas through our network
We transport gas through our 14,725km renewable-ready pipeline network. As well as maintaining networks in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, we have pipelines in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. We do not own the gas; we transport it on behalf of suppliers and shippers.
Investing in new business areas
As guardians of the national gas network we are working to deliver a cleaner energy future for Ireland. We are investing in new technologies such as compressed natural gas (CNG) and bioCNG for transport and renewable gases such as biomethane and green hydrogen.
Connecting customers to the network
Through the New Connections Programme, Gas Networks Ireland brings the benefits of gas to new customers in line with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) policy. We connect all customers to the network, regardless of their supplier.
Managing our gas emergency service
We manage a 24 hour gas emergency service handling over 14,000 call-outs a year.
Maintaining reliability and resilience
As the natural gas network infrastructure is predominantly underground, it demonstrates great resilience and reliability through severe winter weather conditions.
