Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.

 The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:

Reporting to the Head of Treasury and Risk, the Risk Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing GNI’s Enterprise Risk Management Policy and Framework and assisting our business in ensuring that appropriate risk management processes are in place to identify, measure, manage and monitor risks, and report our risk profile. The successful candidate will have a key role in coordinating reporting to the Board and external stakeholders along with working closely with other assurance functions ensuring the effectiveness of our Three Lines governance model. They will also work closely with colleagues across all levels of the organisation influencing behaviours to ensure risk management best practice is clearly demonstrated.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Acting Head of Treasury and Risk in implementing GNI’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework ensuring leading practices are implemented across the business
  • Undertake a key role in planning, designing and managing the GNI ERM Framework, ERM Policy and ERM Governance model
  • Responsible for the ERM plan, taking the lead in delivering business wide risk initiatives and providing risk expertise and support to projects and governance fora as required
  • Manage the annual review of the GNI Risk appetite to support strategic and operational decision making
  • Manage the ERM governance reporting process ensuring there is structured formal review and challenge of the risk profile across the business with appropriate mitigation plans in place. Support the business to review their risks on a timely and proactive basis and ensure appropriate documentation and communication of risks
  • Drive and coordinate the escalation of risks through risk reports to Executive Committees, Audit and Risk Committee and Board. Develop and complete ad hoc risk reports and presentations as required
  • As a trusted advisor, ensure that risks are being anticipated and managed by engaging with key business stakeholders and by participating or leading relevant meetings on key risk areas
  • Drive a culture of risk awareness and speaking up at all levels across GNI with a particular emphasis on ensuring there is a strong Risk Lead and Champion network in place to support the ERM Framework
  • Responsible for ensuring the risk system is embedded in risk management processes across the business. Develop the system, enhance reporting and dashboards to support the ERM Framework
  • Provide risk reporting to external stakeholders
  • Collaborate with audit and assurance teams in line with the Three Lines Governance model
  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels across GNI
  • Provide business continuity and crisis management assurance oversight
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Adopt a ‘one team’ and ‘collaborative’ way of working
  • Perform other duties as required from time to time

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant third level qualification
  • 7-10 years’ experience in a risk management or governance role in a comparable organisation
  • Experience in the development or implementation of Enterprise Risk Management Frameworks or other assurance frameworks would be highly considered 
  • Experience in a utility company or in a regulated industry would be an advantage
  • Previous experience with initiating and maintaining strategic relationships both internally and externally, using strong influencing skills to achieve business goals
  • Experience in coaching and the development of the technical skills and abilities in others
  • Proven track record with dealing with complex issues, proactively and in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others
  • Analytical, precise, pragmatic, enthusiastic, result oriented and possessing a strong commercial awareness
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence key internal and external stakeholders and identify external issues which will impact business performance
  • Proven ability to think strategically and maintain strategic focus while operating across many functional areas in a constantly changing environment
