Flogas Enterprise and Gas Networks Ireland Turn the Sod on Ireland’s First Dedicated BioCNG Refuelling Station

Today, large commercial and industrial energy supplier Flogas Enterprise, and operator of the national gas network, Gas Networks Ireland turned the sod on the Flogas Enterprise’s Bio-CNG refuelling station.

Located in St Margarets in North County Dublin, just off the M50, the 2,900 square metre station is expected to open in April 2024 and will be Ireland’s first dedicated BioCNG station supporting Irish business to decarbonise their commercial transport fleets with clean and sustainable BioCNG fuel. The station will be operated by sister company to Flogas Enterprise, Certa – also part of the DCC plc group.

The renewable gas for the new refuelling station will be predominately sourced from a new anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in Co. Cork and injected into the national gas network. The BioCNG is certified by an EU Voluntary scheme such as ISCC or RedCert, to verify it meets the sustainability criteria set-out in EU law and qualifies as a ‘zero-emissions’ renewable fuel.   The Gas Networks Ireland Renewable Gas Registry tracks the allocation of the biomethane from the point of injection into the grid to the point of withdrawal at individual refuelling stations to meet the EU mass-balancing requirements and ensure compliance with the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme in Ireland, operated by the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA). This dedicated 100% BioCNG station is another renewable market “first” for Flogas Enterprise (part of DCC plc) having already been the first energy supplier in Ireland to supply biomethane through the gas network to companies like Tesco and Diageo in 2020.

For the past number of years, we have supplied CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) to customers and more recently Bio-CNG to a number of CircleK forecourts.  

We are delighted to open our own dedicated BioCNG station, supporting large companies cut their carbon emission further and we look forward to opening more BioCNG stations in the future.”

Diesel powered HGVs produce up to 20% of Ireland’s road transport emissions but only account for 3% of vehicles on our roads. If more large enterprises make the switch to BioCNG, we can significantly reduce emissions in the HGV sector in Ireland”.

The new Flogas Enterprise BioCNG refuelling station is supported by Gas Networks Ireland’s Causeway project, which has to date delivered a network of high capacity fast-fill CNG stations nationwide, developed a renewable gas injection facility, deployed a fleet of CNG vehicles and made a CNG vehicle fund available to businesses in Ireland.

“To date, the Causeway project has supported the development of a renewable gas injection facility in Nurney, Co Kildare, the deployment of a fleet of CNG vehicles and the rollout of four public CNG stations at Circle K Dublin Port, Circle K Cashel in Co Tipperary, Circle K Ballysimon Road in Limerick and Circle K Clonshaugh in Co. Dublin, all supplied by Flogas Enterprise.  

BioCNG is a much cleaner fuel than CNG and traditional transport fuels and, as such, this new dedicated refuelling station will play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector.  

This is the first refuelling station solely dedicated to Bio-CNG fuel, and we hope it will be the first of many.”
