Finglas students get an insight to the ‘World of Work’

Second year students from Beneavin De La Salle College, Finglas, visited the offices of Gas Networks Ireland in Dublin as part of Business in the Community Ireland's (BITCI) nationwide education initiative.

One of six BITCI programmes under this initiative is the ‘World of Work’ programme which aims to help increase student retention rates by showing them the many career and further education opportunities available once they stay in school and attain a Leaving Certificate.

Gas Networks Ireland, the operator of Ireland’s gas grid, and BITCI, the country’s leading organisation in driving the agenda for responsible business, have been helping to bring the world of work to students for over 14 years.

The students saw how Gas Networks Ireland’s employees handle emergency call reports regarding suspected gas leaks and took a stroll through 'Lamplighters Row’ - a simulated set up of Irish houses and streets used for training engineers and fitters - named after the iconic street in Phoenix Park, that still features gas powered streetlights.

Speaking as he delivered the office tour, Gas Networks Ireland’s Siteworks Services Manager, David Gilloughley said: “Being part of initiatives like the 'World of Work' programme is incredibly rewarding. Seeing students' eyes light up as they explore different career avenues reinforces the importance of nurturing their curiosity and ambition."

Jason Poole, a teacher at Beneavin De La Salle College said: "The team at Gas Networks Ireland has been so generous with their time and they have been a great help in guiding our students towards brighter futures and considering potential careers in the energy sector. Through their dedicated support, including the ‘World of Work’ programme and office tours, they've made a positive impact on our student’s educational journeys."

In addition to the 'World of Work' programme, Gas Networks Ireland also collaborates with BITCI in delivering the 'Time to Count' numeracy programme for primary schools nationwide.
